Jupiter; Song 5: Hump de Bump
Fuck, I just realised I could "justify" my columns so everythings nice and straight instead of shitty shitty "align left". Why didn't any of you tell me?! Bastards.
Anyway. "Hump de Bump". I have no idea what this song is about, only the Chili Peppers could title a song “Hump de Bump” and have me thinking it’s absolutely nothing to do with sexual themes. A very funky party song, obvious superficial comparisons can be drawn to “Charlie”, although to me Charlie is a mixture of Blood Sugar Sex Magik and By The Way, whereas this track has a more primal feel and is pure Hillel Slovak-era Red Hot Chili Peppers. Starting off with a double stopped bass-line and staccato guitars, the bass’s complexity is transferred to the guitar in the chorus where some very dense chords are being played.
Two of the nicest surprises on the album are revealed within one minute in this song. First of all, in the second pre-chorus Flea’s trumpets come out of nowhere as it did so frequently in the Mother’s Milk days to accentuate the flavour of the piece, like a nice spice as it were. Thereafter, Chad comes out with a lovely percussion solo (MORE COWBELL!) that comes across like a Jackson 5 bridge. In fact it rivals my personal favourite Chad Smith recorded moment, the bridge in “Coffee Shop” on the One Hot Minute record. Its important to have moments of individual musical brilliance like these sprinkled throughout the album as to avoid it becoming the “John Frusciante” show
So on its own, there isn’t too much to say about this song, which is fine as its not a song to be analysed in depth, just a song that should be played loud. As mentioned before, one of the recurring musical themes of Stadium Arcadium to me is the fusion of all of the Chili Peppers styles in one collection of songs, so even though “Hump De Bump” is not a brilliant defining piece that pushes the Chili Peppers to new musical and emotional peaks, to me its one of the defining songs of the album and Stadium Arcadium would feel completely different without it.

write about italy and their wankiness
To me this is easily one of the best songs on the album. Like you said it's to be played loud and is a funky song that goes beyond the ears and gets inside you.
For starters it has an intro that announces the aural onslaught to come. intros dont need to be long winded (one chord is often enough, or a bass line) and this one is perfect as it slips into the groovefest that is Hump De Bump.
I also loved fleas trumpet work and chads solo (it sounds like he's hitting the metal stand that the cymbals are on).
Lyrically you might think the words sounds silly and might even find it annoying. But i compare it to one of those pop songs that get into your head even if the lyirics annoy you (ie my humps, DCs 'check up on it'). You cant deny that for whatever reasons those lyrical melodies stick. In this case though i think the Chili Peppers have surrounded these types of lyrics with an awesome song.
Mad justify!!
Ahh, Nitch.....ever the perfectionist....
"To me this is easily one of the best songs on the album."
SERIAL?!??
For me = WORST!!
I like no part of this song whatsoever. Automatic skip. I think they should have left it off completely.....but some people like it, so there you go.....
0.5/5
"“Hump De Bump” is not a brilliant defining piece that pushes the Chili Peppers to new musical and emotional peaks"
HE'S CLEARLY RIGHT!!!
"In fact it rivals my personal favourite Chad Smith recorded moment, the bridge in “Coffee Shop”"
No way!!! Are you serial?!
I wouldn't put in anywhere near that, not even close.
"and might even find it annoying"
Yes......yes I do......
"But i compare it to one of those pop songs that get into your head "
Yes, I would too - but I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing for the RHCP....they are capable of better than 'feeble pop songs'.....MUCH better!
i downloaded hump my rump after reading all this
"For starters it has an intro that announces the aural onslaught to come."
aural onslaught? are you serious? if you call this an onslaught then ... well i dont know what...
whats with john and all these little diddly fiddly crappy guitar riffs...theyre so tinny and small and ... crap!!!
the chorus is the only bit i dont mind cause there is more bass and the trumpets sound cool.
CHRIST I LIKE DANI CALIFORNIA MORE THAN THIS!
its not that bad..its just as i was explaining to tom. nowadays i dont expect anything of chilli songs...so if i hear a new song and its not bad...then i think....hmmm well its half ok...
not...well chillis can do much better than this based on their previous stuff.
from my point of view the old chillis had so much more emotion in it. the music made you get pumped, feel inspired...like hearing the drums at the start of give it away, makes you jump around straight away.
same as my lovely man.
otherside conveys so much emotion.
and so forth...
whereas bar a few songs from BTW onwards,it's just a song...that i listen to...without feeling anything.
well BTW i liked...but just as a casual listen. what ive heard of this album is just stuff that goes into my ears and doesnt register anything.
anyways that all i got
maybe aural onlaught wasnt the best word but i dont use the word in a volume of guitars sense like a megadeath song where the drums dont let up. i mean it in a sense of a song thats very pleasing to the ears. it has a groove that heavier chili songs dont have. like a 'walkabout'. if u havent notuiced i quite like these songs for their simplicity in choosing the right chords rather than overloading the song with techinique. to me thats what Hump De Bump does.
well we'll just haev to agree to disagree
the song for me is a pile of stinking crap
bahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
